Our 8th grade has been learning strategies to work through some pretty difficult word problems.
One of those strategies is the 5-Step Plan, which goes like this:
Step 1: Ask yourself what the problem is asking for
Step 2: Assign the variable(s) and state any formulas
Step 3: Write the equation
Step 4: Solve
Step 5: Check your work and revisit Step 1
This strategy was reinforced when students wrote their own word problems to solve. Then, the students solved their problem and made a poster for their problem. Finally, each student presented their problem to the class. It’s was a lot of fun having the students be the teacher and it also promotes higher order learning.
