Yesterday, first grade worked on a cross-curricular activity in which they made their own "potions". Students chose and counted how many ingredients they used.
They used addition to find out how many ingredients they would have if they added it with a partner at their table group. Since they are learning about different states of matter, they observed the liquid properties of their potions. Afterwards, students gave their potions a name and wrote what their potion would do. On Friday, 10/21, 7th grade had fun with a team building activity in the afternoon. They were given very little materials (13 pieces of paper and 1 yard of tape) to build the tallest structure they could with their small group. The tricky part was that they were only allowed to discuss a plan for 1 min. before receiving any of the materials. Once I started the 5 min. clock for them to build, they had to be silent.
They really got into it! Once, the 5 min. was up, they had 1 more minute to revise their plan, the option for more paper, more tape or half the amount of both and we started another 5 min. silent building period. At the end of the 2nd building period, time was up. Some groups were more successful than others and we had a great discussion to conclude the activity. All in all, the students agreed that this activity really highlighted how important clear communication is when you’re working with a group. Kindergarten went to Farmer John's in Half Moon Bay for their very first field trip at NDE. At the farm, we learned all sorts of pumpkin facts, saw a huge 800 pound pumpkin, took a ride on Farmer John's tractor and even got to pick out our own pumpkins to take home! Notre Dame Elementary celebrated the end of Hispanic Heritage month last Wednesday! Check out the cool cultural activities that 7th and 8th grade Spanish classes put together for the school!
Our 2nd Graders created some really amazing animation videos. They are awesome. (I think they even need some extra marbles for all of their hard work Mrs. A!) These young 5th grade chefs learned about fractions while baking delicious treats for the school to enjoy.
8th Grade Celebrated Peace Day in High Style. Take a look at what Peace means to these inspiring young adults. #NDEFamily #worldpeaceday
