Seventh grader tops martial-arts contest

Danica Seto, a seventh-grader at Notre Dame Elementary School in Belmont, recently earned the title of "International Kung Fu Quest 3-Star Grand Champion" during a martial-arts competition in Orlando, Fla. She participated in the 2009 International Martial Arts Competition, showing her skills in the hand-form, short-weapon and long-weapon categories. She also performed during the evening showcase as the "3-Star Grand Champion."

Danica has been studying kung fu since she was 6 years old.

Students at Notre Dame Elementary School have been thinking of others. Students in grades 2, 6, 7 and 8 recently wrote letters to soldiers serving overseas. The school mailed over 100 letters in support of Operation Gratitude. More recently it was “T is for Tsunami” where students in 1st through 8th collected towels, tarps, toys and tee-shirts for the people of Samoa….

Notre Dame de Namur Sister Helen Dugan turned 90 years old on October 2, the Feast of the Guardian Angel. “Students, teachers and staff gathered to celebrate this happy occasion and wonderful woman,” said Jodie Penner, school mom and public relations person for Notre Dame Elementary School. “Our community loves her very much.”

Sister Helen was born and raised in San Francisco and attended the now-closed and much-missed Notre Dame High School. Two years later she entered religious life and “never looked back,” Jodie said. Sister Helen has always enjoyed teaching the younger primary grades and if there is one thing she’d like people to know about her it is that she loves children.

A special birthday card from students named their “90 favorite things” about the beloved religious. These are just some of them: “God made her just right…She knows a lot of good jokes…She likes cookies as much as we do…She listens…She’s cool…She’s there when I need her…She cares about everyone…She’s so optimistic…She always remembers my name…She doesn’t give up on us in class…She’s patient…She’s awesome.”

Sister Helen marks her 70th year as a Sister of Notre Dame in August

Emma Kurr, sixth grade student at Notre Dame Elementary School, won Grand Champion Reserve for her Single Fryer Rabbit at the 2009 County Fair this summer. Kurr has been in 4-H for five years and this was her third year in the rabbit project. Kurr raises Netherlands Dwarfs, Jersey Woolys and Californian rabbits.
